Day 19 12/02/13

"catching up with the latest technology"

Throughout this blog i feel that i am really starting to feel more and more confident with my camera and taking photographs everyday. I am trying to capture a different thing each day but still carrying on and experimenting with techniques and ideas. Portraiture is still a regular occurrence in my blog as i feel that this is one of the most banal appearances in my everyday.
I have been researching into a photographer called Larry sultan who is very well known for the project he did of photographing his parents. The book "pictures from home" reveals a narrative of still images of his parents. Even though some of the photographs are quite staged i found them so aesthetically pleasing to look at, especially the picture of his mum stood up against a wall and his dad sat in a chair watching the television with his back to the camera. This photograph for some reason gave me a feeling of sorrow towards his mother as if she was being ignored.
After looking at his work i decided to take this idea and have a go at photographing my own family as well.
One night I was sound recording my Grandad's voice and thought that this moment was not one to miss and i had to capture it. My Grandad placed on the headphones and listened back to his own voice and i took the photograph. I took it as a side profile as i hadn't taken a picture like this yet.
Even though the photograph just has a basic everyday home setting, i think it works really well as it can give the audience an excuse to be inquisitive which is exactly how i felt and enjoyed feeling when looking at Larry sultan's photographs.
