Day 14 07/02/13

"The rule of thirds experiment"

One of the main reasons behind this photograph was the fact that at uni we have been learning about the rule of thirds. This was something i had not heard about before but after an hour of practising i could really see how this rule makes photography look better.

The basic principle behind the rule of thirds is to imagine breaking an image down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts. As follows.

As you’re taking an image you would have done this in your mind through your viewfinder or in the LCD display that you use to frame your shot.
With this grid in mind the ‘rule of thirds’ now identifies four important parts of the image that you should consider placing points of interest in as you frame your image.
Not only this – but it also gives you four ‘lines’ that are also useful positions for elements in your photo.

Here is some research i found about the rule of thirds on the website "the digital photography school". I used my dslr camera to take this photograph and i used this grid on my camera to help me align my photograph in the right place. On this photograph you can see that i have used the bottom corner of the grid and the top. I also used a tripod for this photograph, this was my first time using a tripod on this blog and i found it very useful. I intend to experiment with the tripod further and practice different heights and angles with it throughout the blog.
