Day 7 31/01/13

"Breaking the rules"

For the first week to get us started an open theme was allowed so that we could really explore and find our feet in producing a successful blog. I have to admit on the first day of taking photographs i felt a little bit lost as i really wasn't sure what to take photographs of. When trying to come up with an idea i started to realise that this assignment is supposed to be filled with what is around me, my everyday. I was trying to hard to create a photograph that would fit the "everyday" criteria rather than making my "everyday" fit into a photograph.
At this time my mum was cleaning the house so i thought this was a great opportunity for me to capture a regular occurrence that happens in my house. At first the idea of just capturing a woman washing a basin in yellow marigolds seemed silly but it wasn't till i explored different angles and depth of field that i began to become hooked. I started to try and look at the photograph from an outsiders point of view of , not knowing the woman in the photograph and what issues this could raise. The idea of the unknown and not being able to see her face i thought gave the photograph a sense of imagination and would raise questions such as "who is she?", "what is she doing?", and "i wonder what she looks like?".
I have given my photographs a title that give away a little bit about each photograph, but not too much as i don't want this to determine a rule of what people should think when looking at them.
One of the photographs is called " A day of remembrance". This photograph was taken at the end of the day after a funeral. The picture's show a close up of the flowers that were placed on top of the coffin. When looking at the flowers you would never have known that this was their job , which again relates back to the unknown as i talked about before. With this photograph i thought that if i named it about the funeral i attended then the audience when looking at it would respond to it in a way where they would think about me (the photographer) being at a funeral and i didn't want the photograph to have a closed meaning. Naming it in an open way where the title could have many meaning's give the audience a chance to express their own emotions and think about many topics such as remembering a loved one or remembering a special day.
Through the last 7 photos i have captured them on my dslr camera and iphone and will carry on exploring these two devices throughout the blog.
